Geoff Cannel Memorial Charity Golf Day 2010

After last years successful event which raised £6,560.00 organisers have been asked many times if they are going to run another event for 2010. It has now been decided that they will stage another Charity Golf Day which is booked to take place on Friday 4th June 2010. The venue will again be at Glen Truan. It is hoped that supporters will help by sponsoring a hole, each being £250. The organisers have already had confirmation from 15 Sponsors that they are going to take part with Isle of Man Bank promising to provide a marquee for the days event.

The 2009 event was well covered across the Islands media as well as gaining coverage on various internet forums and websites. Many celebrities got involved with everyone having an excellent day out on the Golf Course with plenty of good spirits in the beer tent!

Funds raised from the 2010 event will be donated to the Joey Dunlop Foundation and the Rob Vine Fund. Both of these charities were supported in 2009 and it is recognised that the Joey Dunlop Foundation are hoping to open their holiday accommodation during TT 2010 but will still need aid in furnishing and maintaining the property with it's surrounding carpark and gardens.

It is hoped that TT fans will again dig deep and look upon this charity fundraiser favourably!

Joey Dunlop
King of the Roads
1952-2000
Joey was born in Ballymoney, County Antrim and in his teens he discovered what was to be his future in life, racing motorbikes! His racing career began in 1969 and he soon adopted the distinctive yellow helmet and racing number 3. He was a true master of Real Road Racing and his record of 26 TT wins and 5 World Championships proves it! Joey received an MBE in 1986 for his motorcycling prowess and he also obtained an OBE in 1995 in recognition of his charity relief aid trips that he had done many times. He usually travelled alone to places such as Romania and the Balkans. In 1993 Joey was awarded Honorary Freeman of Ballymoney Borough and in 2000 he was awarded the Manx Sword of State in the Isle of Man. At the age of 48 just weeks after winning his final Isle of Man TT, Joey died as a result of a crash during a 125 race in the Republic of Estonia.
Thank you to all who have signed the guest book for your kind words and comments.
Joey Dunlop Foundation Past , Present and Future

William Joseph Dunlop, OBE, MBE., will long be remembered by bikers world wide and his many friends for his record breaking achievements on the famous Isle of Man TT Mountain circuit. However, many of those people may not be aware that family man Joey was a caring person who undertook a number of lone and dangerous missions to the former Eastern European Countries in a van loaded with gifts and provisions for young children who were being deprived of live's essentials.

Immediately after Joey's death David Cretney M.H.K. and Peter Kneale set up the Joey Dunlop Fund in the Isle of Man. Around the same time the Joey Dunlop Benevolent Fund was opened in Ballymoney by Sammy Graham, Joey's Mechanic, and Ballymoney Mayor, Councillor Bill Kennedy. Both Funds closed at the end of 2000. Two large bronze statues were constructed and one was positioned in what is now known as the Joey Dunlop Memorial Garden in Ballymoney and the other is positioned at the Bungalow on the TT course in the Isle of Man. The funding for this was helped greatly by way of large donations given by Ferry Brouwer (Managing Director of Arai Helmet Europe), Bob McMillan, Honda Racing UK and by Ballymoney Council.
A goup of ardent Joey fans decided to approach his wife Linda, to seek her agreement to raise funds to construct a facility that would be of benefit to the community and also be a fitting memorial in recognition of the varied achievements of the person affectingly known as 'Yer Maun'. It was during the initial discussions with Linda and Honda's Bob McMillan that it was revealed that Joey would have liked to have constructed a facility to benefit poeple, especially children, with a disability.
Once this group of admirers had been given the green light by the Dunlop family, fund raising plans were instigated and the Joey Dunlop Foundation, (formerly known as the Joey Dunlop Injured Riders Fund) was established, initially to raise funds to install a lift in the TT grandstand to make access possible to the main viewing gallery for the disabled. The second undertaking was to provide much needed accommodation for the physically challenged and their families on the Isle of Man.

Apart from a sizeable contribution from Arai Helmets, (£57,000) all funds have been raised by the Foundation committee members who have worked long hours, especially during the summer months, and have always looked for much needed extra support from Joey Dunlop fans throughout the world. In 2005 a property was purchased in Victoria Road, Douglas, near the TT Grandstand,at a cost of £200,000.

In 2007 the Joey Dunlop Foundation managed to raise £91,000! This is a fantastic achievement, especially as the Centenary TT did not bring in the revenue which we had hoped for. Unfortunately the building tenders came in at £200k over our available budget, throughout the winter and into the spring of 2008, we looked at ways in which we could provide disabled holiday accommodation on site at a cost within present finances. After a meeting with Linda Dunlop & John Harris, we decided to source 3 independant luxury pine lodges and with consultation with various groups we had to come up with a unique arrangement which would satisfy the planning department. The manufacturing companies that build these fully fitted lodges would not take on the contract  for the propsed unique buildings thus leaving the JDF with a huge dilemma on what way forward the charity should take.

In June 2009 the charity have purchased Braddan Bridge House and sold the Victoria Road site. The new site has many advantages over the previous site with the main points being that it is on the TT Course with excellent veiwing of the TT Races and it has ample space both inside and out. The plans for the conversion, from single dwelling to 3 self-contained appartments, was passed in July 09 and the JDF are now waiting for Building Control approval before calculating the costs for completing the alterations.

The banked funds to date is £100,000, with the total amount raised by the Foundation being £575,000!

Please keep supporting the Joey Dunlop Foundation as we look to complete the project and provide all the necessary equipment including furnishings etc which will be required within Joey's Holiday Home!

A2B Media Publishing House Ltd have teamed up with the Joey Dunlop Foundation to help boost the Charities funds and also raise awareness by producing an Official Business Wall Planner. Various Companies, Associations and Business's have sponsored advertising spaces on the 3ft X 2ft (B1) Full Colour Wall Planners along with messages of support to the Foundation. The JDF have already benefited from a sizable donation from A2B Media with more to come as the planners are being completed and printed. The JDF would like to thank A2B Media for all their hard work in producing this Wall Planner and also to the many Sponsors who have accepted their invitation to join in on this worthy cause!

N. Ireland Planners are now completed with UK ones going out in December.....
Work commences on Braddan Bridge House.......

After many months of waiting all the paper work and procedures are in place now for the conversion works to commence on
Braddan Bridge House
. A team of volunteers have helped strip out the original fittings, (such as bathrooms, kitchen, ceilings and stud walls) in prearation for the conversion of the house into 3 self contained appartments. The fireplace facing brickwork has been removed ready for the removal of the entire chimney stack. The main external change, as well as the removal of the chimney, will be the balcony which will serve as an additional fire escape for the first floor appartment.
Andy Scullard has been the driving force behind the building works and has proved to be an invaluable member of the JDF Committee. He has managed to pull together some highly skilled professionals who are only too happy to help the Foundation.
Kevin Quirk
(Chairman) has had many meetings with various trusts looking to secure additional funding to help us ensure that this facility is opened in spring 2010.

Exciting and hectic months lay ahead for all the JDF committee. We have our annual Dinner on the 16th January and Suzanne is working hard in putting all the plans together for that. Linda Dunlop had an amazing fundraising Black Tie Dinner at the end of October where Trustee Bruce Baker attended. The Foundation would like to thank Linda for her continued hard work and support that she always gives to charity. As the charity reaches its next stage or era, where it will have to spend its hard earned funding on the construction works and materials, the committee are relying on Vari Jones (Treasurer) to keep the acounts in order. As always, we are extremely concerned about the charity's capital and urge our supporters to keep donating! Thank You....
